Carey R. Schaeffer

Carey R. Schaeffer Sr., 77, of Cressona, passed away Thursday at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street. 

Born in Good Spring, Oct. 25, 1936, he was a son of the late Andrew and Ella Young Schaeffer.

He was the husband of Barbara A. Augustine Schaeffer, to whom he was married 57 years.

Carey was a graduate of Porter Township High School and Williams Trade School.

He retired from Allen Sherman Huff Pump Co., Hamburg, and also from Alcoa.

Carey was a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ, Cressona. He also belonged to the NRA, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Hegins Trap Club, Strausstown Fire Company, Orwin Fire Company, Good Will Hose Company, Beckville Gun Club and Amateur Trap Shooting Association and was a past master of Cressona Lodge 222. 

Carey was the 2008 Senior Veteran Champion of the Pennsylvania State Shoot Handicap Championship.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carla Schaeffer, in 1978; and brother, Mahlon "Sonny" Schaeffer, on Aug. 22.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Caren Stringer and husband, Terry, Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Carey R. "Chuck" Schaeffer Jr., Cressona; twin grandsons, Nicholas and Christian Stringer; a sister-in-law, Mabel L. Augustine, Reading; a brother, Edward C. Schaeffer, DO, and wife, Marilyn, Palmyra; nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ebling Stabingas Funeral Home, Cressona, with the Rev. Nathan Druckenmiller officiating. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.
