Clare J. Houser, Jr., 78, of Cape May, NJ, formerly of Pottsville, passed away Sunday, April 2nd, at Cooper University Hospital, Camden, NJ.
Clare was born in Pottsville, on October 13, 1938, a son of the late Clare J. Houser Sr. & Mary (Tucci) Houser.
He was the husband of Linda Kelchner Houser. The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage on February 13.
Clare was a 1956 graduate of Pottsville High School and a graduate of Columbia Institute of Radio & TV Broadcasting, Philadelphia.
He worked for various radio stations in the eastern United States. In 1960, he worked for WHLM, Bloomsburg, and became its news director. He joined WPAM, Pottsville, as a newsman in 1965 and went on to become news and program director and the station’s assistant manager
He also served as executive director for Schuylkill United Way for 32 years, retiring in 2004.
As a Life Member of Pottsville Kiwanis Club, Clare served as past president, and past secretary, a "temporary position" he held for 25 years.
Clare was the voice of The Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival, serving as emcee and Master of Ceremonies for 34 years.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Pottsville, serving as past parish council president and liturgist and was a former member of St. Joseph's Church, Pottsville.
In addition to his wife, Clare is also survived by goddaughter, Cathy Kostick, wife of John, Port Carbon, as well as their daughter, Hannah, at home. He is also survived by a Godson, Hank Beaver and fiancee Dana Riberio, Lemoyne, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Pottsville, on Saturday, April 8th at 11 am.
A viewing will be held at the church from 9am until the time of mass on Saturday.
Interment will be held privately.
