William P. Gray, 92, of Souderton, formerly of Hatfield, passed away Tuesday at Souderton Mennonite Home, Souderton. 

Born in Cressona, Oct. 13, 1922, he was a son of the late Dr. James C. and Sarah Rebecca Herring Gray.

He shared 65 years of marriage with his wife, the former Lucille E. Smith.

He was a graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, Class of 1940. He attended University of Maryland, graduated from Albright College with a bachelor's degree in 1947, and Temple University with a master's degree in 1966.

He was a chemist with the Philco Corp. and United States Geological Survey, as well as Merck, Sharp & Dohme, where he also worked as a virologist. William was also a school administrator and teacher of the sciences with Middle-Bucks Votech.

He served combat service with the 3rd fleet Navy during World War II in the Western Pacific on the USS Frank Knox.

William was a member of Lansdale United Methodist Church, Lansdale, and the Veterans of Foreign War. He was a Free & Accepted Mason with the Schuylkill Lodge No. 138 for 63 years, and Reading Consistory for 60 years. He was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at University of Maryland. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John and George; and sisters, Agnes, Alma, Catherine and Jennie.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Sarah L. Gisondi and her husband, Albert, and Kathryn E. Musselman, widow of Brent; five grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Gisondi, and Christopher, Laura and Erica Mussleman.

A Celebration of Life funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ebling-Stabingas Funeral Home, Cressona, with Pastor Max Jaouen officiating. A viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Cressona Cemetery, Cressona. At the family's request, memorial donations in William's memory may be sent to Montgomery County SPCA, P.O. Box 222, Conshohocken, PA 19428 or to a charity of donor's choice.
