David "DJ" Kurtz

David John “DJ” Kurtz, 78, of Auburn, passed away Tuesday, April 21st, at home.

DJ was born in Williamsport on July 10, 1947, a son of the late Raymond Rudolph & Reba (Harron) Kurtz.

Married 39 years, he was the widower of Paulette Kay (Scarborough) Kurtz and is now reunited with “the best catch of his life”.

He is also preceded in death by his grandson, Ronnie Fetterolf.

DJ was of the Lutheran faith.

He was a 1965 graduate of Mountoursville High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force in Security Forces from 1966-1970. DJ was discharged as a Sergeant after being stationed in England.

From 1972-1975, he worked as a correctional officer for Lycoming County Prison. For the next three years, DJ was the supervisor of the prison. In 1978, he was appointed the Deputy Warden, serving until he became the Warden of the Schuylkill County Prison in 1982. He retired from the Warden position in 1999. DJ received the Warden of the Year award for state in 1984 and was appointed to the MH/MR Advisory Board. He also belonged to the PA Warden Association.

Following his retirement from Schuylkill County, DJ worked as counselor for the Concern Home for Boys - Mahoning Valley, for 11 years.

DJ was an avid hunter and fisherman; and especially enjoyed trout fishing at Loyalsock, & Big Pine. He was a member of Pine Grove Fish & Game, NRA, American Legion, and Auburn VFW Post #3975.

DJ was a past coach for Montoursville Little League, scoutmaster for Reedsville Boy Scouts, and was a player, coach, and manager for modified softball league. He also belonged to a bowling league.

DJ is survived by three sons: John Raymond Kurtz (Maggie), Mechanicsville, David Matthew Kurtz (Jennifer), Pine Grove, & Sean Kurtz, Schuylkill Haven, his brother: Rick Kurtz (Nana), Pittsburgh, grandchildren: Taylor, Corrine, Nicholas, Nathan, Megan, AnnMarie, & Justin, great-grandchildren: Owen, Rylee, Aubrey, Sophia, Reyvion, & Oaklynn.

Private services will be held at the family’s convenience.

At the family's request, memorial donations in DJ’s name may be forwarded to Hillside SPCA - PO Box 233 Pottsville, PA 17901.
