Bruce Hummel Obituary

Bruce George Hummel, 96, of Schuylkill Haven, passed away Thursday, March 2nd, at Luther Ridge at Seiders Hill, Pottsville, where he had been a resident.

Born in Auburn on August 26, 1926, he was a son of the late Moses L. & Mada N. (Phillips) Hummel. 

Bruce was a graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, Class of 1944. 

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from September 28, 1950 until he was honorably discharged, ranked as a Corporal, on September 20, 1952.  A talented musician, Bruce played the trumpet in the 8th Army Band (Senior Theater Band in Korea). 

Bruce was married to the late Norma Jean (Plodis) Hummel, his loving wife of 54 years; until her passing June 9, 2012. 

Bruce was a devout man of God, and a faithful member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Schuylkill Haven.  He held several leadership positions at church including Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, and Chairman of the Official Board.  He was a former member of the choir, sang bass in the original Echoes of Grace, and played the trumpet in the church orchestra. 
Bruce was a member of the Cressona Band for 50 years.  He also belonged to the Schuylkill River Boys, Baker’s Dozen, and Trumpet Trio.  He is the last surviving member of the Gospel Four, and was an inaugural member of the Schuylkill Symphony. 

Skilled in woodworking, he was employed by the Schuylkill Haven Casket Factory for 45 years. 

He is survived by two children: son, Rev. Dr. Joel Bruce Hummel & wife, Nicole, Hanover, PA, and daughter, Judith Kay Devlin & husband, Michael, Schuylkill Haven, two grandchildren: Brandon M. Devlin & wife, Rebecca, Lake Wynonah, & Meghan M. Heim & husband, Rev. Jonathan, McKeansburg, and three great-grandsons: Daniel Deatrich Devlin, Micah Joel Heim, & Collin Deatrich Devlin.  Bruce is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Roma Sailors, Germantown, TN, & Carol Seltzer, University Park, FL, and several nieces & nephews. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Bruce is also preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Harold C. Hummel, and sister, Mildred Hummel. 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be conducted at Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Schuylkill Haven on March 18th at 11 AM.  A visitation will be held at the church from 10 AM until the time of service. Interment with military honors will be privately held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
