Scott Irvin Fleagle

Scott Irvin Fleagle passed away on July 24, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Bainbridge, and sons Benjamin and Jackson Fleagle.

Scott was born in Reading, PA in 1954 to the late Ray H. Fleagle Jr. and the late Lillian Smith Fleagle. He was the fifth of eight children, all of whom remain close today and survive their beloved brother: Bill Fleagle and wife, Cheryl, Schuylkill Haven, PA; Cindy Frost and husband, Dick, Liberty, ME; Glenn Fleagle and wife, Thum, Phuket, Thailand; Mark “Mooker” Fleagle and wife, Colleen, Schuylkill Haven, PA; Karen Wallace and husband, John, Pottsville, PA; Marsha “Mush” Hepler and husband, Steve, Schuylkill Haven, PA; Tom Fleagle, Centreville, MD. 

After graduating high school, Scott served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician and deployed to both Europe and the Asia Pacific regions during the Vietnam War. Later, he fought fires for the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico before studying economics at Ursinus College – a degree he put to use as the owner of Big A Auto Parts in Pottsville, PA for over a decade. After retiring from business, he pursued a variety of projects, including working with carpenters and for the U.S. Census Bureau.  

Scott was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. He was a member of the East End Gun Club and often took biking, kayaking, and road trips, including bicycle trips along the East Coast, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, and around the United Kingdom. He was also a musician; he wrote beautiful music, played guitar and the harmonica, and sang in the locally loved Lewis Fleagle Brothers band for decades, as well as the band, Between Floors.

He was an early bird – early to bed and early to rise – a good listener, and a voracious reader who loved to learn new things. Scott always had a project he was working on, including the so-called “Dumpy House” that he spent years renovating before moving with his family from Schuylkill Haven to New Ringgold. Many family and friends would seek consultation from him on their own house projects, and his advice was often followed by an offer of help with any work.  

Scott touched many lives in big and small ways. He will be remembered as a dedicated community leader and family man. He was a member of the New Ringgold Community Fire Company and the American Legion, as well as a Golden Pass holder of the Schuylkill Haven Area School District and a Senior Pass holder of the National Parks Service. He often held fundraisers for autism at the Red Valley Cabin, which he owned with his wife, sister, brother-in-law, and friends and used as a space to bring people together, particularly his family.

A private celebration of Scott’s life will be held at the Red Valley Cabin in August. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you contribute to your local library and conservation efforts.
